Bill Reid Skidegate pole, Haida Gwaii Museum, Skidegate, BC

The Bill Reid pole (foreground) at the Band Council Office in Skidegate was raised in 1978, the first to be raised on Haida Gwaii in over one hundred years. For safety reasons it was taken down in 2014 and moved to the carvers shed at the Haida Gwaii Museum in Kay Llnagaay (Skidegate). The museum plans on preserving the pole and having it stand tall once again in the pole gallery for locals and visitors to see. This caused some controversy among the Haida, since they believe that all totem poles should be left to decay naturally and finally go back into the earth.
